Inexpensive Molds for Soap Making
If you’re just starting out on the adventure of making your own soap, you may be apprehensive about buying a ton of specialty items for a hobby you may not continue pursuing or enjoy. We understand! But don’t despair, it’s easy to find a variety of items you can use as soap molds without having to buy specialty products.
Milk carton mold
A quick and super inexpensive loaf mold can be made out of a standard ½ gallon mill carton. Take an old jug of milk and rinse and clean it well. Pat dry and then cut one side of the carton off, leaving the sides. The waxed coating on the inside of the carton means you don’t have to line the mold and you will be able to easily remove your soap by tearing the carton. To properly fill this carton, you’ll want about 2 to 2½ pounds of soap.
Yogurt container soap mold
Single use yogurt containers are great for single bar soap molds. They are also really beneficial if you’re making clear soaps with suspended additives. If you fill the container, you can get two rounded bars by slicing them down the middle when cured.
Pringles can mold
Pringles cans are great for making multiple round bars of soap. Once your soap has cured within the Pringles container, you can remove it by slowly unraveling the container so as not to damage the soap, and then cut each bar evenly. You can also produce multiple semi-circle soaps by slicing the can in half.
Cereal box soap mold
Like the milk carton, you’ll want to cut off one side of the box but unlike the milk carton mold, you’ll want to use a new cereal box so that the top has not been opened. Also, you will need to line this mold since the cardboard will absorb your soap. A plastic bag or plastic wrap will work well as a liner. You’ll only want to fill this mold 3/4” deep or you’ll risk the box bulging.
Liquor boxes
If you’ve ever purchased a nice bottle of alcohol that came in a wooden box, you have the makings of a great soap mold! You can also kindly ask the liquor store if they have any on hand, since many liquors are sold in commemorative boxes but are not given to the customer. You will also need to line this box, since they are not watertight and wood is absorbent. Luckily, they are quite sturdy!
